The Prime Minister said on Friday that he was trying to "discern what is urgent, what is essential, and what can be spread out over time" regarding the budgetary austerity plan, which will be presented before July 14.

"We are now facing a moment of truth and we will do what is necessary with justice. By trying to discern what is urgent, what is essential, and what can be spread out over time," the Prime Minister affirmed, on the sidelines of a visit to the Association of Small Towns of France, in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence (Bouches-du-Rhône). While several sources are raising the possibility of a "blank year" (budget freeze), François Bayrou emphasized that "none of the measures are arbitrated," but that the plan would be presented "before July 14" and that it would be "comprehensive and coherent."
The presentation of this plan will take place after the end of the parliamentary session on July 11, according to a source close to the Prime Minister. When announcing this presentation at the end of May, François Bayrou had specified that it would be a "multi-year plan" to restore public finances that "will require an effort from all French people." He had notably opened the door to a "social VAT" while remaining evasive about his budgetary choices. The government intends to prioritize spending reductions over tax increases in its next budget, to generate €40 billion in savings, divided between the State, Social Security and local authorities, in order to reduce the public deficit and debt.
